About the Farm
Hacienda Santa Luz
Hacienda Santa Luz was one of two farms bought as abandoned lots back in 2003 in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. The farm was purchased with a long-term view of re-establishing coffee plantations in the area but in a way that was more sustainable an environmentally-friendly. This involved the replanting of coffee trees with new and diverse coffee varieties. As a rainforest certified farm however, the expansion of the farm was carefully planned to minimise cost to the environment. Embracing new higher yielding varietals or with improved disease resistance also contributed to increasing the yield. An ecological processing plant was also built on the farm to reduce the impact on the environment.
